Kashmir
The heavenly destination, Kashmir has been admired by the entire world not only for its nature, beauty and charm but also for its attractive destinations. Kashmir has been crowned as "the heaven on earth" and the most adorned tourist destination of India. The beauty of Indian hills is half explored if somebody has not visited the Kashmir valley at least once in his lifetime. The lush green valleys, blossoming gardens, tranquil lakes, narrow rivers, snow covered peaks offer you to some golden moments in the lap of Mother Nature.
Location
Kashmir is located at the top of the map of India. Kashmir is the largest valley which is spreads over an area of 105 sq km. This hilly region is situated at around 1730 m above from the sea level and the geological appearance of Kashmir is as such that it is encircled by a number of neighboring countries. The countries with which Kashmir shares it s borders are Pakistan and Tibet. Himachal Pradesh and the state of Punjab also share their borders with Kashmir.
Places to see
The Old City: This heritage city still bears the essence of the medieval India. The city location, atmosphere and lifestyle revitalize the mind of the exhausted travelers. The brick buildings, men and woman in traditional attires, temples and mosques, active markets are the elements for an artist’s delight.
Hazratbal Mosque: This is the only doomed mosque of Srinagar which is located on the western edges of the Dal Lake. The magnificent reflection of the white marble mosque can be viewed in the water of the nearby lake.
Jama Masjid: The Jama Masjid is located in the centre of the old city which came into existence in 1400 AD. This is one of the significant mosques of Srinagar which reflects the Indo-Saracen architectural blend. Large number of people gathers to offer their prayers on every Friday which is undoubtedly a rare scenario to experience.
Shankaracharya Temple: This holy temple is situated on the top of the hills called Takth-i-Sulaiman. The great Shankaracharya lived here during his visit to Kashmir for the revival of the Sanatan Dharma during the 250 BC.
The Awantipur Ruins: This ancient township is located 29 kms away from Srinagar. This heritage place is famous for its huge temple adorned by the Lord Shiva. The magnificence of this heritage complex has been destroyed with the passage of time and the supplementary shrines are located in different corners of the premises.
Imambara Zadibai, Shah-i-Hamdan, Hari Parbat Fort, Makhdoom Sahib,Chhatti Padshahi Gurudwara, Martand Temple, Kheer Bhawani, Parihaspora Budhistic Site, Harwan Buddhist Ruins, Burzhama Ruins are some other places of Interest in Kashmir.
Dal Lake: Dal Lake is the 2nd largest lake of J&K and is known to be one of the most beautiful and tranquil lakes of India. This lake is surrounded by lofty mountains from three sides and the lake shores are covered with colorful orchards. The colorful houseboats popularly known as Shikara are the unique attractions of Dal Lake.
Wular Lake: You can experience the serenity and tranquility of Kashmir in the Wular Lake. This is one of the biggest fresh water lakes of the Asia continent which in other words can be termed as a nature lover’s paradise. The sight of this lake gives you the feeling to enjoy the absolute magnificence of a countryside relaxation.
Nagin Lake: This lake is situated close to the Dal Lake which is best known for its on boat shopping. Boating and shopping at a time is a thrilling experience for the tourists. Visitors can buy handicraft items, pashmina shawls, and other products while enjoying a boating in the Nagin Lake. Movable mobile phone booths are also available there.
Shalimar Garden: This histoirical garden was constructed by the Mughal Emperor Jehangir during the 1619 AD. The entire garden is divided into three sections, Diwan-i-Aam, Diwan-i-Khas and the special area meant for the ladies. The architectural beauty of the garden along with the cascading water channels, beautiful fountains, huge chinars, massive pavilions reflect the flavor of the great Mughals.
Nishat Garden: The largest Mughal Garden which spreads over an area of 20 ha was constructed in 1632 and is known to be the garden of delight. Nishat Garden is located on Dal Lake and is equally an enchanting place for the tourists.
Pari Mahal: The name Pari Mahal is a twisted version of the original Peer Mahal which was constructed by the Mughal prince Dara Shikoh. This was once upon a time the summer residence of Peer Mullah Shah. The attractive terrace garden, captivating Mughal architecture, the Zabarvan Mountain range at the back altogether create a marvelous beauty which is very fascinating.
There are also a few more gardens situated in and around Kashmir which are worth to be visited. Some such gardens are, Mughal Garden Verinag Anantnag, Harwan, Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip garden, Botanical Garden Kokernag etc.
National Park: The Jammu and Kashmir wildlife protection act was enacted in the year 1978 to preserve and protect the diverse wildlife varieties of the state. The Dachigam Nationa Park located 18 kms away from Kashmir is a protected area for rare wild species like Kashmir stag, Tibetan wild ass, musk deer, snow leopard, markhor and birds like black necked crane, pea fowl, fragophan pheasants etc.
Other than these places of interest, Srinagar is the place which is famous for its Mughal architectural monuments. A number of historical places, pilgrims and monuments of Kashmir are basically situated in Srinagar. Gulmarg is best known for its adventure sports facilities. Sonamarg, located 84 km away from Srinagar is famous for its natural beauty and spectacular views. Pahalgam is the place from where the Amarnathji Yatra (a journey to faith) commences every year; therefore, this place holds a religious significance in Kashmir.
How to reach
Travelling to Kashmir is pretty easy as this hilly region is very well connected by rail, road and air with the rest of India. The internal communication system of the city is also well managed and convenient.
By Air: The closest airport is located in Srinagar which is 14 km far from the Kashmir city. Daily to and fro flights connect this place with major cities of India.
By Rail: One can find direct railway connectivity from Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, Pune to Kashmir on a regular basis. Jammu Tawi is the nearest railhead for Kashmir. Additional trains are being provided during the tourist seasons to manage the tourist flow in Kashmir.
By Road: Road network connectivity is very smooth in Kashmir. Government and private buses run through the city and this place is directly accessible from different neighboring destinations.
What to do
Skiing: One of the major attractions and adventurous sports of Kashmir is skiing. Gulmarg is the venue for skiing during the peak wintry season.
Trekking and Maintaining: Kashmir is a wonderful place to commence a trekking trip on the Himalayan ranges. Himalayan adventure sports also include maintaining and some of the famous peaks are Harmukh, Sunset and Kolahoi.

Best time to visit
The best time to backpack your baggage for a trip to Kashmir is between the months of March to October. The climatic condition of Kashmir remains refreshing during this period which is simply perfect to enjoy a tour. Kashmir in this period experiences three different seasons; spring during the months of March to May, summer from May till August and autumn between September to November. Every season has its own shades and colors which amply reflects in the valleys of Kashmir. The cool refreshing climate of the summer, flourishing nature of spring and the shades of autumn all offer the perfect season for Kashmir tour. However, adventure lovers can enjoy boundless exciting sports during the peak wintry season.
History
Kashmir is the only place which holds a periodical history of its ancient past. Kashmir is predominantly a Muslim oriented region but a bond of brotherhood and harmony could be seen between the Hindu and Muslim people inhabiting there since the 13th century. Kashmir has given birth to a couple of well known historians also and Kalhan the writer of 'Rajataringini' is one of them.
Climate
The weather of Kashmir is very unpredictable and different area observes different weather conditions. The climatic condition can be divided into four distinct seasons such as spring, summer, autumn and winter.
Spring arrives in March and lasts till May. The average temperature recorded during this season rages between 23° c TO 6° C. Slow wind, heavy shower and budding flowers symbolize spring in Kashmir. Summer is not very hot in Kashmir and the temperature in the day time raises up to 25°C to 35° C. Autumn is a very colorful season in Kashmir and the average temperature remains between 10° C to 23° C during this period. December to March is the season of winter in Kashmir when the weather becomes icy cold.
